Note: This page is currently a work in progress.
We show data from two sources on this page:
- City of Northampton budget “General Fund Expenditures” for “Northampton Public School Department”
- DESE “In-District Expenditures” for Northampton
As you can see below, these two figures differ substantially. For example, Noho’s 2024 budget shows a $36.6M general fund expenditure, and DESE shows $54.9 for In-District Expenditures.
The city’s budget figures presumably show only amounts that come to the school district from the city’s general fund, whereas DESE’s figure also includes funds that come from other sources such as state and federal funding, gifts, etc.
We’d like to confirm these assumptions, and get details. What funding sources does DESE include? Also, do the city’s budget figures include state Chapter 70 funds? The budgets report these funds as general fund revenue, and funds reported as revenues must also be reported somewhere as expenditures. Are they included in the “Northampton Public School Department” figure?
If you know of some authoritative source that answers these questions, we’d be grateful if you would contact us and share this information with us.
